Hallelujah and Praise the Lord for our KECA denomination and its continual growth here in America.  Hello my name is Rev. Sam Koh and it is of great pleasure to be invited to write about the exciting development that is taking place regarding the next generation of believers of our denomination.  I grew up in this denomination for my father Rev. Nam-Cheol Koh was and still is a pastor of this denomination.  Since 1992, I have been serving in our denomination and as I look back I must admit that God has done and is continuously doing great things to this day in the KECA throughout America.  As I think about our denomination, I have so many things to say, however, I will stick to one topic throughout this letter.  That topic my friends concerns the future of our English Speaking Congregation in this denomination.  So far the scenario seems to look something like this.  One of our KECA churches begins an EM with a pastor usually from another denomination.  After a few years, things do not work out and the EM Pastor leaves with the congregation, splitting up the church and planting a church of a different denomination with the people that our KECA churches have been raising up until this time.  I know we are all God’s people regardless of denomination, but shouldn’t we keep our KECA tradition alive even through our English speaking generation?  Therefore, in order for us to have a victorious game plan for the future, we need to ordain more English speaking pastors in our denomination who are willing to either harmoniously work with the existing KECA 1st generation church or be blessed to plant a healthy 2nd generation KECA church.  However to get English speaking pastors to desire getting ordained in our denomination is not easy.  Presently and in the past our KECA denomination has been dominated by the Korean language and culture.  Everything from ordination process, annual and district meetings, etc. have been dominated by 1st generation Korean spekaing Korean-Americans.  Well, we the second and third generation are quickly on the rise and unless our denomination have things prepared, we will certainly lose this very needed group as this is already a pattern that exists at this time.  I have been seeing many of our KECA PK’s (pastor’s kids) go into ministry and get ordained by other denominations and serve in other denominations.  This is simply because we have not given much thought concerning recruiting English speaking pastors to our denomination.  Therefore, I feel that first and foremost we need to establish an English speaking group or branch in our KECA denomination that strongly focuses on meeting the needs of ordination, assimilation and cooperation for our English speaking pastors.  Secondly, we need many of our official KECA denomination documents to be written in proper, grammatically correct English.  My third request is that, we simplify the ordination process and make the whole process in English so that it is competitive to other denominations.  Just doing these three things will greatly improve our “find and keep” ratio when desiring English speaking pastors to enter into our denomination.  I feel that there are many 2nd and 3rd generation English speaking pastors on the rise and many of them have gone to Presbyterian, Baptist, Methodist, or Non-Denominational organizations such as ECA because these denominations were prepared to accept these English speaking pastors.  Shouldn’t the KECA be ready to bring in these English Speaking Pastors as well?  I believe that the future holds bright for the next generation English speaking pastors to hold their place and for them to participate in the KECA denomination as active members.  Let us work together to make this a possibility and may the Lord bring in many more next generation pastors to our KECA denomination.

Hi Pastor Sam,
It's a delight to read your writing here. Your father told me about you while I was taking a class with him. He taught a class entitled "Constitution and Ministry." Since I got ordained as a Baptist minister, I had to take two classes including the one your father taught. I thoroughly enjoyed the class and learned a lot. Your father was a great teacher. He went the extra mile answering all the questions and commenting on my reports.

Although I am from another denomination and in the process of getting into the KECA denomination, I'd like to see the KECA denomination flourish and thrive. As you pointed out, I agree with you in that the KECA denomination needs to be competitive to other denominations, and to do so, it needs to be able to assess and diagnose the current way of doing church and denomination, and in that process ferret out the ineffective and bad practices and overcome unnecessary stumbling blocks and barriers. It also needs to create a culture, ecclesiastical and denominational, which will enable congregations of all generations will be proud of their denomination, its teachings, and history. I am not sure how many of our EM congregants are familiar with the history and doctrines of the denomination.

Anyways, it's exciting to see some postings on this website, including yours. I hope that more pastors would come on board and get involved. I pray that we would keep the momentum going.
